How to Cleanse Your Space: A Ritual Rooted in Joy, Intention, and Protection
Cleansing your space is one of the most powerful energetic resets you can give yourself and your home. I believe in doing things a little differently - with more joy, more intention, and more soul. Here's how I personally cleanse my space, and why I encourage you to do it in a way that feels not just sacred, but empowering.
Feel Safe Before You Begin
Before you even light your sage, make sure you're feeling safe and grounded. Energy work is just that—work—and it requires you to be present. If you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or off, wait until you feel more stable. This isn’t just a checklist - it’s a ritual.
Put on Music That Makes You Happy
This is one of the things I do that surprises some people: I blast music. Loud, happy, soul-filling music. Music that makes me want to dance and sing.
You’re not just cleansing out the negativity - you’re calling in the joy. That energy matters.
Open Your Windows and Doors
This is essential. The smoke needs somewhere to go - somewhere to take all the energy it’s gathering. Visualise that smoke taking the heaviness with it. Watch it leave your home.
Start Smudging With Intention
Light your sage, let the flame burn for a few seconds, then blow it out gently so the smoke begins to rise. Walk through your home slowly.
Focus on corners and entryways - energy builds up in these forgotten spaces.
Spend extra time in places where you spend the most time: For me, it's my kitchen where I cook, my sofa where I unwind, and my bed - the most sacred space of all.
Your bed especially holds so much energy. As someone who has experienced unrest and negative dreams, I always make sure to give that space extra love.
As you move through your space, you can say a simple affirmation like:
"I release what no longer serves me. I welcome peace, joy, and protection."
Visualise the Energy Leaving
This is the part some people skip - but it's the most powerful. Don’t just wave the smoke around - see the heaviness being lifted. Feel it being replaced by warmth, laughter, and light.
This is where the music works its magic. You’re not just removing energy - you’re transforming it.
Keep the Windows Open for a While
If you can, let the fresh air continue to circulate. If it's cold, a few minutes is enough. You’ve done the work - the energy is already shifting.
Didn't Clean First? That’s Okay.
Sure, cleansing a tidy space can feel extra fresh. But don’t let a messy house stop you. Energy work is about intention, not perfection. Do what you can. That’s enough.
Protect Your Space from What Comes In
Be mindful of who you invite into your home. Your space is sacred - it holds your energy. Not everyone deserves access to it.
One final tip: I would always advise against these, but if you have a welcome mat outside your front door, turn it upside down or remove it during energy work. A mat that says “welcome” isn’t just greeting your friends - it can be inviting in everything, energetically speaking. Protect your threshold.
Your Home, Your Sanctuary
Cleansing your home isn’t just about smoke and rituals. It’s about claiming your space. It’s about choosing joy. It’s about aligning your physical surroundings with your emotional well-being.
Your home is your sanctuary. Treat it like sacred ground - because it is.
